The itinerary now skirts the characteristic Sagrantino grape vineyards, which yield the famous DOCG (guaranteed and protect origin) wine of Montefalco and of the neighboring towns. The vineyards contribute to the traditional agricultural landscape of rows and hedges interspersed by small, cultivated plots delimiting the properties, with ditches and streams lined by riparian vegetation alternating with small strips of woodland. A landscape in contrast with the flat fields of the lower territories of the Umbrian Valley where most of these natural obstacles have been removed to allow the tractors easier maneuver, at the cost of losing the biodiversity of the traditional agricultural ecosystems. Hedges, rows, ditches, dry stone walls offer shelter to numerous animal species that contribute to maintaining a balance within the agricultural areas, in which humans and nature work in synergy.
