The church, also known as the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pianto, was built in the thirteenth century, constituting the first settlement of the Augustinians in Foligno. The current appearance is the result of a renovation that took place in the first half of the eighteenth century. The remarkable façade with four Corinthian columns and two stone statues is due to Nicolò Cesari and Francesco Antonio Bettini, based on a design by Pietro Loni. Behind the apse stands the thirteenth-century bell tower, the highest one in the city. Inside, on the first altar on the left, there is a canvas by Domenico Valeri depicting the Almsgiving of Saint Thomas of Villanova, Blessed Alonso de Orozco and Saint John of San Facondo. On the second altar there is the Madonna della Cintola by Felice Damiani. The vault is decorated with a fresco, the Glory of Saint Augustine by Liborio Coccetti. In the presbytery there is the simulacrum of the Madonna del Pianto, venerated since the 17th century in Foligno. The image comes from the church of Saint Leonard, destroyed by an Anglo-American bombing during the Second World War, which heavily damaged the area of Via Garibaldi.
