The village of Cantalupo develops along the road to Bevagna, on the edge of the vast Cannara plain near the Attone stream. Its development was functional to the great agricultural potential of the area, and it was listed as Castrum Cantalupi in the historical Statute of Bevagna. The church dates back to 1684; it was first dedicated to the Holy Madonna of the Seven Sorrows and built in the place of the oldest church of San Michele Arcangelo. Of particular interest are two buildings, with loggias dating back to between 1500 and 1600 and a series of aedicules built into the walls of the houses. The area is also known for the important Church of the Madonna della Pia, located on a hill just west of the town, and for the ‘Edicola di Piandarca’, along the main road towards Torgiano. The latter celebrates the most significant event that took place in the area: the sermon to the birds of Saint Francis, an event traditionally located 2 km north of the town.
