Once we reach the hill called “il Castellaro”, at an altitude of 965 m a.s.l., we can see the remains of a settlement from the sixth century BC: the Castelliere of Mount Castellaro or “di Talogna”. The land clearly shows the signs of a large elliptical moat that delimits a rise in the ground. It is a fortified site whose typology is well attested on the Plestini Plateaus: see, for example, the settlements of Mount Orve and Croce di Casicchio between the swamp and Colfiorito, distinguishable by looking south-east. These castellieri had a primary function of defense, sighting and control of the main communication routes: therefore they were located at high altitudes and had moats and delimiting embankments. From the Castelliere of Mount Castellaro we can enjoy a wide view over all the plateaus and the highest peaks: it is not difficult to understand how strategic the position of this settlement was in ancient times.
