Before reaching the Sassovivo Abbey, we come across the Chapel of the Blessed Alano, a building located a few steps away from a monumental fountain immersed in the centuries-old holm oak forest. Also called "hermitage", the chapel stands on the oldest part of the monastic settlement of Santa Maria in Valle, whose foundation dated 1060 is attributed to the monk Mainardo. The structure consists of a two-arched loggia from 1442 built over the crypt of the 11th century.
