Forcatura is a real balcony overlooking the Colfiorito Marsh. The village, already present in the 11th century, is located on a high plateau at an altitude of 850 m above sea level: the oldest nucleus is built around the Church of San Lorenzo, entirely rebuilt in the 1800s. The name derives from the word “forca”, with the meaning of pass or bifurcation. The toponym clearly recalls the strategic role with respect to the road system that has always characterized the town, born as a village of shepherds. It is not a case that the Via Lauretana passes through Forcatura, reaching Loreto from Cortona-Assisi, following the Franciscan Way of the Marca between Assisi and Ascoli Piceno.
