In the past, the entire Spoleto Valley was occupied by two lakes, the lacus Clitorius and the lacus Umber. The reclamation works carried out by man since ancient times, in order to subtract fertile land from the swamping that has always characterized the area, have irremediably altered the habitats that once characterized the entire valley. Today some traces of that biological diversity remain along the waterways: artificial canals alternate with small strips of riparian forest and reeds that still offer shelter and protection to numerous animal species. Woods of poplars, alders, willows are increasingly fragmented and it is increasingly difficult to observe monumental specimens such as the one positioned along our itinerary.
