The town of Piedimonte is part of the rural village of Acqua Santo Stefano, attested since 1098. The main historical sites of this settlement, which arose in an area already occupied in pre-Roman and Roman times, are located north of Piedimonte and are the Church of San Nicola and the Casale la Torre, an old fortification now part of an agritourism. Piedimonte is positioned at an altitude of 958 above sea level at the foot of Monte Santo Stefano and Monte di Morro, at the crossroads of the mountain roads. The town is structured in two blocks separated from the road: to the south-west there is a hotel and to the north-east, stands Casa Salvati, a building recognizable by a plaque affixed over the entrance stairway. The plaque commemorates the tragic events that took place here on February 3, 1944: during a roundup, German troops killed Gregorio Salvati and deported Rinaldo Salvati and others to Mauthausen. Rinaldo was the only one to return alive.
