A partially modified bridge is what only remains of Florence Gate, formerly St James Gate, visible in its wholeness in a nineteenth-century print. It represents the northern entrance to the city and is the best place to photograph the River Topino. The Topino rises on the slopes of Mount Pennino (1,571 m high), in the locality of Sorgenti del Topino, near Bagnara, in the municipality of Nocera Umbra, at 649 m above sea level. In ancient times it was initially known with the Umbrian name of Supunna and then with the Latin name of Tinia. Foligno is the most important city crossed by the Topino. The course of the riverbed was regimented to protect the city from floods in the first half of the nineteenth century by engineer Antonio Rutili (born in Foligno in 1799 – died in 1850).
