The path you have just traveled continues into an ancient cart track climbing up from Verchiano. A short distance away, in the opposite direction to our path, one may notice the ruins of the Church of San Sisto immersed in the dense forest. The church, which was used on and off until the 1997 earthquake, is now in a very bad state. Going east and onto the modern road network, one may reach the ancient fortress of Verchiano. The castle, attested since 1262, overlooks the current village of Verchiano and retains parts of the ancient walls and four towers.
