In the centre of the village of Cannaiola stands the imposing Church of San Michele Arcangelo, which was built in the early 1600s and today is a sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Pietro Bonilli. The interior of the church has a single nave in Baroque style; the left side chapel houses the remains of Pietro Bonilli, who was the priest of the town since 1863 and was proclaimed "blessed" by Pope John Paul II in 1988. His remains were moved here after the 1997 earthquake that damaged the Church of San Filippo in Spoleto, the place where they were previously kept. The church also preserves the remains and relics of various martyrs, including San Marice, co-protector of Cannaiola since 1647. Cannaiola is today a populous inhabited centre, the result of a complex settlement built in an area first subject to swamps, then to copious reclamation. The town cemetery preserves, in the perimeter, the structure of the ancient castle built around 1540.
