After crossing the Topino river, not far from the junction with the Menotre tributary, the village of Scanzano begins. The town is crossed by all the most important itineraries, which overlap here: the Via Lauretana, the Path of Olives and the Franciscan Way of the Marca. The inhabited center is connected to that of Vescia and to the more distant and populous Belfiore. Scanzano and Vescia, separated by the Menotre stream, are in fact often identified in toponymy as one. If the village of Vescia has been known since the Middle Ages, the town of Scanzano undoubtedly stands on a much older site, occupied by a Roman villa. The toponym, ending in -ano, is in fact a predial: that is a toponym which refers to a praedium, or a land possession, in this case, one that probably belonged to Scantius.
