The Colfiorito plateaus have always been transit areas, crossed by the main communication routes. Also for this reason, from the 6th century BC., a very ancient system of occupation of the territory was consolidated there, based on the "castelliere". The castelliere is a fortified settlement of defense and sighting located on the heights, surrounded by moats and embankments: the closest and most evident are those of Croce di Casicchio, which dominates the swamp, and Mount Orve. Even today Colfiorito is an obligatory point of passage for those moving between Umbria and Marche. Not surprisingly, some of the most important hiking itineraries in Italy and beyond run around the Colfiorito marsh: the Path Italia, which crosses the whole nation, the European Path E1, which connects North Cape in Norway with Capo Passero in Sicily, the Via Lauretana, which from Cortona-Assisi reaches Loreto, and the Franciscan Way of the Marca between Assisi and Ascoli Piceno.
