The Menotre river, which crosses through Pale, despite its very narrow bed, has a consistent and constant flow of water as it is fed by some very large springs. The river flows in some areas in the tight narrow gorges of the valley and its riverbed is almost completely covered by a dense and flourishing submerged aquatic vegetation. The banks are often home to numerous hygrophilous riparian species, predominantly willows and cypress poplars. Where the current slows down small pools form and collect pebbles, roots and plant debris, becoming the perfect home to the sweet water crayfish. The crayfish are also a bioindicator of the environmental quality and health of the river, as they require fresh, clean and well oxygenated water to survive.
