The area around Pale has elements of high naturalistic interest, and therefore is part of the Natura 2000 network of natural landmarks of the region of Umbria. The area includes the Altolina Waterfall Park which – as the name suggests – is comprised of a number of cascades the Menotre river creates while crossing this area. Walking up the path that runs along the waterfalls, starting from Belfiore, one may enjoy the “Nature Itinerary” with panels illustrating the environmental peculiarities observable along the watercourse. The route continues past Pale and onto the Sasso di Pale, a limestone relief on which the most important rocky holm oak woodlands of Umbria thrive. The path of the waterfalls is now also part of the Via Lauretana, a hiking route that from Cortona and Assisi reaches Loreto, retracing the historic Lauretana way which once passed by Pale and the Hermitage of Santa Maria Giacobbe.
