Defined as the "Olympics" of games, the Giostra della Quintana is one of the most important historical reenactments in Umbria and Italy. Born in 1946, the Giostra resumes an ancient seventeenth-century knightly tournament and sees the ten districts of the city challenge each other at the "Campo de li Giochi". Here the knights show off their skills to gallop a series of rings, emblems of victory, power, and fidelity. The winning district wins the Palio, a drape made by the most important contemporary artists.
It takes place in two editions: in June (La Sfida) and in September (the Revenge).
The Giostra della Quintana is not only competitive: the day of the races is in fact preceded by a sumptuous procession whose figures parade through the city in baroque costumes. The event also has a gastronomic side: in the taverns of the ten districts, located in the historic center of Foligno, it is possible to taste traditional Umbrian dishes, accompanied by the best local wines.
