At the Civitella Mountain Pass, with its meadows crossed by paths traced in very ancient times, one may enjoy a splendid view of the Casone and Popola plateaus. Looking north, the view opens onto Mount Cupigliolo, whose northern slope, moderately steep and characterized by a limestone substrate, is connected to the karstic system of the plains of Colfiorito. The area of Monte Cupigliolo is characterized by a thick forest known as Macchia di Cupigliolo (lower part) and Selva di Cupigliolo (upper part), dominated by the Turkey oak, hornbeam and beech trees. This unique mixture of plant species is only present in limited areas of the Umbrian Apennines and in very particular geomorphological and bioclimatic conditions. The bare open areas of the summits are the hunting ground for the Apennine wolf, nowadays well distributed throughout the territory, for the grasslands are foraged by its preferred prey, the roe deer and the wild boar.
