In the hamlet of Volperino, one may notice the Church of San Mauro or San Marone, the main monument of this mountain village, located at an altitude of 850 meters above sea level. This medieval settlement is of pre-Roman origin, formerly under the control of the Abbey of Santa Croce of Sassovivo and later under the town of Rasiglia. In 1130 Michele degli Atti, a veteran of the first Crusade, donated to the Abbey of Sassovito the relics of San Marone, hermit and Syro-Lebanese saint and founder of the Maronite Church, who lived between the 4th and 5th centuries AD. The relics were transferred from the Abbey to the church in Volperino, named after the saint in 1138, and custodian of the saint’s remains for a long time. The relics were subsequently moved to Foligno and then traveled from place to place until recently returned to Lebanon. The church is of abbey origins and was part of a Benedictine monastery. It has been the subject of numerous restorations and inside it preserves frescoes of great historical and artistic interest.
